X 9 in. steps can be sawed out go . simultaneously, after which a in. rabbet is cut in the rear edge for the back panel. Next the center step is cut to fit between the sides with a in. clearance for the rear panel. The better practice would be to route dadoes across the sides to house the step, although dowels will prove satisfactory. Fig. 2.34. Step end table. The center step can now be doweled and glued to one side at a time, after which the top step is doweled in position. While they are drying the aprons are attached to the floor by pocket screwing, or with dowels, or by means of angle irons or mortise fasteners. Dowel holes are drilled along the top rear edges for attaching the sides. Corresponding dowel holes are drilled in the ends of the sides and the table is assembled after the back panel has been slid into place in its dadoed and rabbeted recess. If it is not intended to use the table for upright books, the rise or height between steps can be reduced to the conventional 7 in., the back panel omitted, and the floor raised to 10 in. or 11 in. This will permit 4in. or 5in. aprons, which are sufficient to house a shallow drawer. For the craftsman who has access to power tools a typical turning of simple design will insure symmetry to the legs. The faces of the top and step edges can be cut slightly concave and the face of the floor, convex. This will necessitate INDOOR FURNITURE CONSTRUCTION . 9 bandsawing a convex apron to match. All edges of the top, step, and floor ca: be reeded or molded to enhance a mahogany finish. ' Back: Fig. 2.35. Corner console table. Corner Console Table. By constructing a console table on the diagona (Figure 2.35) an interesting triangular design results, which in no way impairs it usefulness. The drawer is constructed as shown in the detail of the back, Figure 2.35, and can be glued together and nailed, the bottom being omitted, for the time being. When dry, the top is cut into two triangular parts, whose edges are beveled or molded as desired. The aprons, legs, and drawer slides are assembled on the top for fit, upside down. All aprons are fastened to their legs with three dowels at each end.
