The binders alon the narrow edges of the original table show square pegs on 6in. centers. If de sired, these can be simulated by sinking ordinary round dowels У$Лп. below th surface, chiseling out a square hole, and glueing in a false plug to fit. Next the legs should be cut and tapered, by planing and sanding, to iin squares at their bottoms. Double tenons can now be cut in all aprons that fi into the tops of table legs, with single tenons in the (front) drawer rail. The tenon: that fit into the right rear leg are mitered for maximum length. The mortises ii all legs are cut so that the aprons and drawer rail will fit flush with the fron surfaces of the legs, without setback. Holes are bored to accommodate the pins (in. dowels) through both sides of each leg as well as its tenons. The left rear apron corner is jointed by a lapped dovetail as illustrated. Tht °nginal joint shown in detail B, Figure 2.36 b, has three ij4in. tails in the rear aPron and four pins in the side apron, with a in lap. The upper pins are У in. 94 . Fig. 2.366. Combination gateleg table. wide and the two center pins slope from y% in. to in. Both tails and pins are У% in. deep. The finger joint for the gateleg pivot is cut with diagonal ends as shown in details С and D, and bored for a in. dowel as pivot. The frame should now be assembled "dry" and squared for fit. Then the righthand legs can be glued and pegged into the mortises of their side apron and the left front leg glued into its side apron and set aside to dry. With sufficient clamping facilities the left rear dovetail can be glued up at the same time. The left rear leg is also glued and pegged to its apron, after the latter has been separated from its pivot. Next the drawer rail is rabbeted at the extremities of its top edge to receive the drawer runners, or slides, as shown in detail A, Figure 2.37. The opposite ends are drilled and fitted with dowels that fit into holes bored in the inner apron. A Fig. 2.37. Combination gateleg table. INDOOR FURNITURE CONSTRUCTION с he drawer guides are cut to fit between the front legs and corner braces, illustrated. The drawer runners can now be glued and clamped into their rabbe in the rail. In the meantime the drawer parts can be cut and fitted. As shown in В Figure 2.37 the 27in. front is cut into %cin. pins % in. deep, with а %б_ш 1< for concealment. The tails are % in. at their wide ends. A in. dado is с 14 in. up from the bottom of the back of the drawer front to accommodate tl plywood panel, that slides in to form the bottom. The sides are 16 in. overa with two wide tails as shown, dadoed for the drawer bottom. The 334in. bad piece clears the bottom of the drawer, which is fastened to it with brads. When the leg joints have dried, the spreader can be glued and attached wit countersunk screws to the gateleg apron's extension, as shown.in A, Figure 2.36 1 The drawer rail with its attached runners can now be glued and pegged into plac between the front legs, after dowels in the rear of the drawer runners have fin been glued into their holes in the inner (rear) apron.
