A tilttop game table (Figure 2.42) can serve as an attractive fire screen when not in active use, since during offduty hours its veneered top can be tilted up to display its design. The legs and stretcher can be planed to octagonal surfaces, rounded or latheturned as facilities permit. The feet and lyre support are bandsawed according to the pattern in Figure 2.42. The top rail is notched to permit the projections at the top of the lyre to fit flat under the rail when the top is tilted to its upright position. The three decorative dowels are fitted into the lyre as shown, being surmounted by turned or whittled ball caps. The lyre's top rail has doweled to its top, two ears or projections for supporting the table top when it is horizontal, and is screwed to the top of the lyre support. A hole is bored in the center of its upper edge to receive a metal pivot pin, such as a cutoff 2od nail, or in. dowel, to be fitted into a corresponding hole in the top rail of the table. The lower end of the lyre is screwed to a rounded in. base, which is drilled to receive the lower pivot INDOOR FURNITURE CONSTRUCTION I Lumber List Thickness, Width, Length, Pieces in inches ш inches in indies Description I Va 30 30 Top (plywood) 2 12 12 23 Legs 2 1 12 25 Rail and stretcher 2 12 4З4 14 Feet I 1 12 I5M Lyre support I ixA 12 18 Lyre top rail I Va 1 4 Lyre base I 12 12 6 Plinth 3 J4 - - Dowels 3 2 - - Balls in. The plinth is beveled as shown and is screwed or doweled to the spreade rom underneath with a centered hole in its upper surface for the end of th< ower pivot. After the feet are doweled into place, the tenoned top rail and stretcher are "dry"fitted. The pivots of the lyre support are then inserted with washers between the rotating surfaces, and the rail and stretchers glued and clamped into their lortises. When dry, the top is butthinged at its center to the top of the rail. Small wedges are glued to the underside of the table as shown, to tighten it against the lyre support when the latter is swung open. The top veneer is discussed in Chapter 5. Removable Table Top. For seating eight players at a standard sized 30 in. X 0 in. folding card table, an octagonal top (Figure 2.43) can be constructed from lywood and lumber scraps, which will provide space for chips or counters during Le game. When not in use it can be lifted off and stored away with the folded ble. Given a square into which an octagon must fit, to determine the dimensions of the sides of the octagon, one half of the diagonal joining opposite corners is used as the radius for circles whose centers are located at each of the corners respectively. The intersections of the circumferences of these circles with the sides of the square can be connected to form triangles at each corner. Cutting off each of the four triangles at its hypoteneuse will leave an equilateral octagon.
