higher than the side rails so that the dowels of all three rails will fit above each other in the back posts. The slats are spaced as shown in B, Figure 2.48, being mortised and tenoned into the back, top, and bottom rails. They are fitted into place "dry" before the INDOOR FURNITURE CONSTRUCTION mortises for the latter are marked in the back posts. After the fit is checked entire back assembly, including the back rail and the square rung, .is glued clamped. Great care must be used in applying the clamps_to insure proper a at all points. Next the front assembly is glued and clamped. Fig. 2.48. Side chair. When both front and back assemblies are thoroughly dry the mortises for side rails and rungs are measured, marked, and cut according to pattern. It be noted that the side rails pitch downward j4 in. at the rear. The ends of each side rail and its two rungs are then glued and doweled the corresponding mortises or holes of the front assembly. The procedure is 1 repeated with the back assembly. As the clamps are tightened, constant cat exercised to insure the proper angles and pitch, so that the chair frame will 1 out foursquare and without wind. After the clamps are removed, corner blocks are cut and screwed in place the inside of the frame, % in. below the top edges of the rails. Cleats can screwed between corner blocks as supports to the seat pad, as shown in the plai The seat pad is constructed from four pieces of %in. stock cut to fit into top of the chair frame to rest on the cleats and corner braces. A %6in.sqi orner mortise is cut % ln deep in each inside top corner of the front leg; eceive the frame. The frame should fit loosely enough so that several layer; 1UU . muslin, plus the upholstering material, can be tacked to the edges of the frame, as explained in Chapter 7. Although the Colonial prototype of the graceful ladderback chair shown in Figure 2.49 was often constructed from longlived hickory, the simple back posts can be of birch or other suitably strong wood, left plain, as illustrated, or finished off with turned finials. The slats are bandsawed to save steaming and bending, and the rushbottomed seat is woven as explained in Chapter 7.
