An optional method would be to construct one or two loveseats, omitting the arm toward the corner. When constructing settees, sofas, or loveseats with a definite location in mind, actual measurements can be translated into furniture that will fit the exact position. В Fig. 2.53. Multipurpose stool. Multipurpose Stools. A sturdy set of from three to six kingsize stools (Figure 2.53) will serve as a single or double bed at night and a couch or aroundthecorner sofa by day. Of simple lines in the modern manner, the stools are of an elementary construction which is easy to upholster. Because only the lower portions of the legs are visible, the frames can be built of ordinary rough lumber. Since it is presumed that night duty will be infrequent, these stools are designed to measure 26 in. square, which will allow a deep divan seat, after subtracting the depth of back cushions laid perpendicularly against the wall. If three or more stools are to be constructed, all sidepieces can be cut to a 2 54in. length at one time. Legs can likewise be cut from rough "2 in. X 2 instock, which actually measures about 1 in. X 1 И in. If each side board on each stool is attached to its leg so that all butt joints are identical, assemblyline INDOOR FURNITURE CONSTRUCTION I Lumber List (one stool) Thickness, Width, Length, Pieces in inches in inches in inches Description 4 i i ii Legs 4 7 25 Sides 48 36 26 Top (26 in. As in chair and table construction, these succeeding operatioi should be performed with the stools upright, to insure solidity. To prevent sagging, the ij4,in.thick cleat is nailed across the center of th frame, narrow edge up, as indicated in A of Figure 2.53. The top of the stoo consisting of any scrap %m. stock, is nailed to the top edges of the frame. T conserve lumber, these top strips can be spaced not more than 1 in. apart. A optional method is to tack crisscrossed webbing in place of the solid top. In thi case an additional cleat should be halflapped into the center of the first clea at right angles, to prevent bowing in of the sides; both cleats should be 23 in below the top edges of the frames. The upholstery of the stools is not difficult. Two or more thicknesses of cottoi batting are cut to fit flush with the top edges, held down by black muslin 0 cambric tacked to the faces of the sides. A strip of the upholstering materia about 12 in. wide is then tacked to the under edges of the sides, with its sean glued along one corner. Two thicknesses of cotton batting are cut to fit the foui sides, as in detail B, flush against the top padding, and the upholstery material i: brought up and lightly stitched or basted to the muslin topping. The upholster) material is smoothed out and V snips cut in the corners, so that they lap smoothly before it is permanently stitched to the muslin.
