projecting "throat" to cover the rear of filler (?), or a small fill strip can be added. In the interests of economy, the rear of the footboard can treated the same way as the headboard. The base of the footboard is bandsawed out of solid stock and dovetaili to the lower rail at the ends; it can be screwed from underneath at its thinn portion. The in. veneer banding is bradded and glued into place with mit joints at the corners. The bedrails are equipped with hooks that recess into the head and footboan so that the bottom edges of the rails are 9 in. from the floor. Before the insk cleats are screwed flush with the bottom edges of the bedrails, open mortises ai cut along the top edges to house 34in. bed slats, as shown in the detail. Casters can be inserted in the ends of the headboard legs and the ends of th footboard base. If a nonskid surface is desired, inverted rubber caster cups ca be tacked in place. Fig. 2.57. Bedside tables or commodes for accommodating lamps, reading materials, smoking accessories, radios, telephones and other aids to insomnia, have become basic bedroom furniture. The custom of pairing twin tables or night stands has progressed to an ingenious trend for attaching these units to a horizontal headboard to form a single, integrated piece. I A simple form of this type of headboard is illustrated in Figure 2.57. It has the advantage of making the open shelves accessible to the occupant of the bed from a semireclining position. The distance between the two shelving components 124 . in the drawing is 36 in., which should be sufficient for the averagesized single, or twin, bed. Before such a headboard is constructed, however, the exact width of the head of the bed should be measured, in order to insure adequate shelf clearance. The spacing of the shelves is optional, depending upon the height of the articles they are to hold. The sides and backs of the shelving are butted as shown in the drawing, with dadoes У in. deep to house the straight edges of the shelves, 10 in. apart. As illustrated, the top corners of both side members are rounded off. The base can be built up from Уin. stock bandsawed on a 5n«in. radius to recess У in. before the veneer is applied. As indicated in the drawing, economy of material results from using ij4in. blocks between the two pieces. Another method would be to glue four З4in. sections and bandsaw the outer edges into quadrants to which the in. veneer could be glued.
