the proportions appear better when observed by the curved cabrioletype leg. The rear legs are tapered to iin. squares at their bottoms. The aprons and rails are mortised and tenoned into the legs with in. offsets, as shown in Figure 2.63 except for the back apron, which is flush. Fitted together "dry," they serve as a pattern to mark the cutouts for the legs in the corners of the bottom. The latter has a in. rabbet in. deep cut out of the bottom edges of its back and sides to fit in grooves routed % in. above the bottom edges on the inside of the aprons. The two side aprons can now be glued into their legs and the drawer guides screwed in place as filler strips between the legs, projecting Vie in. as shown. Meanwhile the drawer slides are doweled to the drawer rail. When the glue has set, the bottom is screwed to one of the front legs and the tenons of the rear apron are glued into their mortises in one side. At this time the drawer rail is doweled into the same side and the drawer slide screwed into place. When dry, the other side is added, beginning at the rear leg, with the rabbeted edge of the bottom housed in its grooves. Both drawer guides are fastened securely to the rear apron by screws from the back. The drawers, being small and light, are buttjointed, glued, and screwed at the rear corners, and rabbetjointed to the front, or dovetailed as Figure 2.58 explained. A in. filler strip is glued and bradded along the lower edge to slide against the guides in the carcass, as was explained in detail В of Figure 2.60. These guides are in reality projecting filler strips screwed to the inside of the side aprons between the leg projections, before the slides (or runners) are screwed into place for the top drawer. No runners are needed for the lower drawer, which slides along the bottom of the table. The top can be fastened to the frame with glue blocks, or angle irons so that there is a in. overhang on all edges but the back, which is fitted flush. More permanent methods are purposely omitted. Writing Table. A writing table of simple, modern lines, with a drawer for stationery (Figure 2.64), will serve a variety of purposes. The top rail is dovetailed into the tops of the front legs to lock the frame together, and the drawer rail is doweled into the legs and the filler strips between the legs.
